Report from Student Trustees
Student Trustee Duncan provided an update on behalf of the student trustees. Student Trustee Duncan reported that the Student Senate meeting took place on Wednesday, May 22 and noted that this was the last Student Senate meeting for the 2023-24 school year. Student Trustee Duncan shared that Student Trustee Majid presented on the topic of Student Safety: Making Schools a Safe Place for All and that the presentation focused on strategies to reduce vandalism and vaping at schools.

Trustee Tribute
Trustee Lloyd presented Kit Luce, District School Effectiveness Math Facilitator, with the Trustee Tribute. Kit Luce was commended for her commitment and dedication to teaching mathematics and for her many contributions as a math facilitator at the SCDSB.

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the closed session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, May 22, 2024:

  1. That the Board approve the lease extension as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-1, Wasaga Beach - Simcoe Shores Secondary School and Learning Centre - Lease Extension, dated May 1, 2024.
  2. That the Board approve the lease renewal as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-2, Cookstown Maintenance and Operations Facility – Lease Renewal, dated May 1, 2024.

  6. That the Board ratify the collective agreement reached with the Simcoe County Elementary Teachers’ Federation for the term of Sept. 1, 2022, to Aug. 31, 2026, as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-b, Board Ratification of the Simcoe County Elementary Teachers’ Federation (SCETF) and Its Local Agreement, dated May 22, 2024.
  7. That the Board approve the appointment of Peter McLean as Supervisory Officer – Superintendent of Education K-12, effective August 1, 2024, according to the terms of a personal services contract between Peter McLean and the board, as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-c, Appointment of Supervisory Officers – Superintendents of Education K-12, dated May 22, 2024.
  8. That the Board approve the appointment of Kristen Muscat-Fennell as Supervisory Officer – Superintendent of Education K-12, effective August 1, 2024, according to the terms of a personal services contract between Kristen Muscat-Fennell and the board, as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-c, Appointment of Supervisory Officers – Superintendents of Education K-12, dated May 22, 2024.

Consent Agenda
All recommended actions outlined in the Board Meeting Reports were approved by the SCDSB Board of Trustees during public session of the regular meeting of the Board.

D-4 A – Business and Facilities

The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy 2110 – Trustee Attendance at Conferences and Workshops, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. BF-D-1, Revisions to Policy 2110 – Trustee Attendance at Conferences and Workshops, dated May 1, 2024.
  2. That the Board approve revisions to Policy 2410 – Transportation of Students, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. BF-D-2, Revisions to Policy 2410 – Transportation of Students, dated May 1, 2024.
  3. That the Board approve the 2024-25 Proposed Budget, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. BF-D-3, 2024-25 Proposed Budget, dated May 1, 2024.
  4. That the Board approve the 2024-25 Proposed In-year Deficit Elimination Plan in the amount of $5,510,000, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. BF-D-3, 2024-25 Proposed Budget, dated May 1, 2024.

Reports/Updates from Staff
John Dance, Director of Education, provided an overview of some of the initiatives that took place during the past month across the SCDSB. Director Dance noted that Innisdale Secondary School hosted the OFSAA provincial badminton tournament, that the Leadership and Indigenous Education departments hosted a leadership pathways event for individuals who identify as Indigenous, and shared that the ‘You Make a Difference’ staff recognition program saw over 750 staff recognized by their peers since the program’s inception. Director Dance commented on school visits throughout the month noting the strong focus on math, literacy, and music and shared that many SCDSB elementary schools are running elementary technology programs. Director Dance commended the 44 SCDSB secondary school students who represented the board at the Skills Ontario Competition and commented on his attendance at both Skills Ontario and the Skilled Trades Expo in Elmvale.

Director Dance noted that staff, in partnership with the Unions, will be participating in upcoming Pride parades in Barrie, Orillia, and Collingwood. Director Dance also shared that in recognition of Pride Month in June, SCDSB schools and the Education Centre will fly the Progressive Pride Flag from May 31 to June 10. In recognition of National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day, the Every Child Matters Flag will be flown at all SCDSB schools and the Education Centre from June 14 to June 24.
