Latest update - as of Feb. 19, 2020

All SCDSB schools and adult learning centres to be closed Friday, Feb. 21

On Feb. 12, the provincial branches of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) announced their intent to proceed with a full legal one-day walkout across Ontario on Feb. 21. In the SCDSB, ETFO represents permanent elementary teachers, occasional elementary teachers and designated early childhood educators (DECEs), while OSSTF represents permanent and occasional secondary teachers and continuing education instructors.

As a result, all SCDSB schools and adult learning centres will be closed to students on Friday, Feb. 21, as there will not be sufficient supervision to ensure student safety. Transportation for all SCDSB students will be cancelled on Feb. 21.

Before and after school programs in our buildings will not operate. Parents/guardians who have children in full-day child care in SCDSB schools should contact their provider directly. All out-of-school activities will also be cancelled.

SCDSB will postpone the EQAO Grade 9 math assessment currently scheduled for January 2020

The Minister of Education announced that school boards will make local decisions about whether the province-wide EQAO Grade 9 math assessment should proceed as scheduled. The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) has made the decision to postpone the EQAO Grade 9 math assessment currently scheduled for January 2020.

Due to the current provincial job action by members of Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) who would normally administer the assessment, the SCDSB feels there would not be adequate supervision or supports in place for students, especially those with special education needs.

In a statement issued on January 8, the Minister of Education said that students who do not take the EQAO Grade 9 Math Assessment in January will need to take the test in June. The board will await further direction from the Ministry with respect to a make-up assessment for semester 1 students. Board staff would then work through the logistics of administering such an assessment, as this would pose significant challenges for both school staff and Grade 9 students who are not studying math in semester 2.

Students and families will be provided with more information as it becomes available.
