Angus Morrison celebrates five years of partnership with Nepalese community at Dec. 12 bazaar
On Dec. 12, members of the community are invited to ‘Discover Nepal’ and celebrate Angus Morrison Elementary School’s five-year partnership with the Shikharapur Community School in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Students have created companies and mass-produced products to sell at the school bazaar, with 100 per cent of the profits going directly to the Nepalese school. The bazaar will also include examples of Nepali student artwork and a ‘Taste of Nepal’, where authentic Nepali cuisine will be available to purchase. The food will be served with the support of volunteers from Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School. Students will have the opportunity to see and purchase each other’s work throughout the day on Dec. 12.

Since 2014, Angus Morrison students have raised approximately $22,000, which equates to approximately 1.8 million Nepalese rupees, for this initiative. This funds have supported the purchase of much-needed computer equipment, post-earthquake construction of temporary bamboo classrooms and partial construction costs for a new school building, as well as the construction of a house for a Shikharapur student whose home was destroyed as a result of the 2015 earthquake.
The two schools have worked together on a number of projects over the past five years, including a Grade 1 digital mosaic art exchange (Grade 1), a Grade 3 ‘I am Canadian; I am Nepali’ art and letter writing exchange, a Grade 5-6 traditional art lesson exchange, Grade 8 digital pen pals and a Grade 8 collaborative musical piece, created by students from both schools.
This initiative links directly to the Simcoe County District School Board’s Strategic Priorities in the areas of excellence in teaching and learning and community.
