Soup from (and for) the soul served up at Barrie North

Each Wednesday at Barrie North Collegiate Institute, the school’s mental health and well-being committee is working to address food access for students. The Soul Soup program is intended to ensure all students have access to hot, nutritious lunches during the winter months, when food access can be a challenge due to the higher cost of fruits and vegetables.

The program is a joint effort of various departments at the school. Students in food and nutrition classes prepare the soup each week, while students in the Learning Centre participate in field trips to local grocery stores to purchase supplies, learning valuable life skills such as budgeting, nutrition, shopping and navigating local transit.

Each Wednesday during lunch, all students are invited to enjoy a cup of soup at no charge, and with no questions asked. Staff who participate in the lunch program are asked to provide a small donation to help cover the program’s costs.

Community members, organizations or businesses who are interested in supporting the program through donations are invited to contact Kelley Wilkey, school social worker, at [email protected], or Shannon Gibbons, teacher, at [email protected].
