SCDSB Update 1 – August 29, 2018

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, August 29, 2018. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole

The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, August 29, 2018:

  1. That the Board approve a facility partnership with the Township of Oro-Medonte based, in principle, on the terms outlined in APPENDIX A (MOU), as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-a, Township of Oro-Medonte Partnership – Memorandum of Understanding, dated June 20, 2018.

  2. That the Board approve the School Administrator Appointments as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-a, School Administrator Appointments, dated August 29, 2018:

    Jane Dewar from Georgian Bay District S.S. (Teacher) to Willow Landing E.S. (Acting)

D-2-a Notice of Motion from the June 20, 2018 Board Meeting 

The Board approved the following motion:
  1. That the SCDSB hold a trustee candidate event within six weeks of the opening of nominations in each municipal election year to explain the roles, responsibilities and rights of a SCDSB trustee. 
D-5-a Trustee Representatives for the Renaming Committee of the Simcoe Alternative Secondary School

The Board approved the following motion:
  1. That the Board appoint Trustees Michele Locke and Suzanne Ley to serve as members of the renaming committee for the Simcoe Alternative Secondary School, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Trustee Representatives for the Renaming Committee of the Simcoe Alternative Secondary School, dated August 29, 2018.

Questions and Proposals from Trustees

Trustee North requested a discussion regarding the board’s position on the Health and Physical Education Curriculum.

Reports/Updates from Staff

Director Blake shared that the SCDSB recently partnered with Ashoka Canada, a social changemaker organization, and Georgian College to develop a network of institutions focused on social innovation and change. As a result of the partnership, Twin Lakes Secondary School was nominated and is set to become the first designated changemaker high school in Canada. This designation recognizes the innovative and inclusive programs and the integration of empathy as a determining factor throughout the school culture. Confirmation of the official designation is expected shortly.  

Superintendent Jeffs provided an update on the Educational Development Charges and highlighted the upcoming meetings being held jointly between the Simcoe County District School Board and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board: 
  • September 6, 2018 at 10 a.m. - Stakeholder Meeting at the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board
  • September 10, 2018 at 6 p.m. - Joint Information Meeting at the Simcoe County District School Board
  • October 25, 2018 at 6 p.m. – Consideration of By-law Meeting at the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board
Superintendent Jeffs provided an update on the legislative/direction changes from the new government.

The Board had a discussion about the Health and Physical Education Curriculum. Director Blake shared a letter to be issued to SCDSB staff regarding the Health and Physical Education Curriculum.
