SCDSB students and staff receive awards for inclusion excellence

Each year, Empower Simcoe presents awards to individuals who promote and exemplify an inclusive school environment. Nine Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) students and staff recently received Inclusion Excellence awards to acknowledge and recognize their ongoing efforts.

The recipients are:

  • Sarah Byl, Special Education Facilitator, SCDSB
  • Joanna Cappuccitti, Applied Behaviour Analysis Coordinator, SCDSB
  • Justina Debney, Special Education Resource Teacher, Bear Creek SS
  • Arianna Goarley, student, Innisdale SS
  • Anita Kent, Special Education Consultant, SCDSB
  • Katherine Lindros-Ivey, Special Education Resource Teacher, Lake Simcoe PS
  • Stephen McClelland, Principal, Couchiching Heights PS
  • Anne Miller, Applied Behaviour Analysis Coordinator, SCDSB
  • Niki Tokhi, student, Fieldcrest PS

"Empower Simcoe is honoured to recognize these deserving SCDSB students and educators fostering inclusion, equity, and a sense of belonging within their respective school environments every day," says Empower Simcoe Chief Executive Officer Dr. Claudine Cousins. "Their commitment to inclusion in education for students with intellectual disabilities and their families make them most deserving recipients of the 2023 Empower Simcoe Inclusion Excellence Award."

"These students and educators are inspiring role models who are exceedingly worthy of this recognition,” states Chris Samis, SCDSB Superintendent of Student Achievement (K – 6) and Special Education. “They have had a profound and lasting positive impact on countless students and families within the SCDSB."

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB Strategic Priorities in the areas of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Community.
