Barrie North student awarded $80,000 STEM scholarship

The Schulich Leader Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to entrepreneurial-minded high school graduates from across Canada who are enrolling in a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) program. This year, Barrie North Collegiate Institute (BNCI) student Sophie Pavlik has been selected as one of 100 scholarship recipients from across Canada.

Pavlik has been awarded an $80,000 scholarship to pursue her studies in the Departments of Chemistry and Mathematics at The University of Victoria in British Columbia.

“This award recognizes Sophie’s great personal achievements, but it is also inspirational to the school community of stakeholders including staff, parents/guardians and students. It validates our efforts to provide a positive learning environment that allows all students to reach their potential,” says BNCI Principal Greg Brucker.

The Schulich Leader Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich in recognition of the increasing importance and impact that STEM disciplines will have on the prosperity of future generations. This year, entrance scholarships are being awarded to 100 high school graduates enrolling in a STEM undergraduate program at one of 20 partner universities in Canada.

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB’s Strategic Priorities under the pillars of excellence in teaching and learning and community.
