Sixth annual Rotary Book Day promotes literacy in SCDSB schools

On November 17, Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) schools across Barrie will recognize their sixth annual Rotary Book Day. Grade 2 students at 25 schools will receive copies of Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure, donated by the Rotary Club of Barrie. The Rotary Club is also providing a video recording of Rotary mascot Sprocket reading the book.  Students will read along with Sprocket in their classroom as they enjoy this wonderful story.

“Our ongoing partnership with the Rotary Club of Barrie aligns with our character education program, and supports our students in fostering a love of reading,” says Charlene Scime, Superintendent of Education, Leadership Development and Educational Partnerships.

Aligned with the SCDSB’s character education program, Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure is a story of a young entrepreneur named Andy who, with the help of a mysterious voice providing guidance and support, learns the value of truthfulness, fairness, goodwill and partnerships that benefit everyone involved. The school board’s character attributes – integrity, responsibility, cooperation, caring, respect, optimism, honesty, empathy, courage and inclusiveness - align with Rotary’s 4 Way Test of - Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

This initiative links directly to the SCDSB’s Strategic Priorities under the pillar of excellence in teaching and learning.
