SCDSB Update 3 – October 27, 2021

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, October 27, 2021. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from the Student Trustees
Student Trustee Nasir provided an update on behalf of the student trustees. Student Trustee Nasir shared that the Student Senate met virtually on October 27. Student Trustee Nasir shared that students participated in discussions about student mental health and well-being led by the Canadian Mental Health Association. 

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole

The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, October 27, 2021:

  1. That the Board approve the lease renewal for 1070 Innisfil Beach Road, Town of Innisfil, as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-1, Simcoe Shores Secondary School Lease Renewal - Innisfil, dated October 6, 2021.
  2. That the Board approve the school administrator appointments as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1, School Administrator Appointments, dated October 13, 2021.

    Elementary Vice-principal appointment effective November 1, 2021
    Jennifer Viherjoki from Coldwater P.S. (Teacher) to Orchard Park P.S. (Acting)

    Elementary Principal appointment effective November 1, 2021
    Megan Francis from Orchard Park P.S. (VP) to Forest Hill P.S. (Acting)

D-4-a Business and Facilities
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board approve the proposed attendance areas effective September 2022, as set out in APPENDICES G and H of Report No. BF-D-1, Attendance Area Review 2018:01 – Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury Elementary Schools, dated October 6, 2021.
  2. That the Board approve the opening and partial transfer of the French Immersion program, from W.H. Day Elementary School to new North Bradford public school effective September 2022, as set out in Appendix I of Report No. BF-D-1, Attendance Area Review 2018:01 – Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury Elementary Schools, dated October 6, 2021.

D-5-a Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium Annual General Meeting (AGM) Designated Voting Member and Alternate Voting Member
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board appoint Trustee Peter Beacock to serve as the designated voting member for the November 25, 2021, SCSTC AGM, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. D-5-a, Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium Annual General Meeting (AGM) Designated Voting Member and Alternate Voting Member, dated October 27, 2021.
  2. That the Board appoint Chairperson Jodi Lloyd to serve as the designated alternate voting member for the November 25, 2021, SCSTC AGM, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. D-5-a, Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium Annual General Meeting (AGM) Designated Voting Member and Alternate Voting Member, dated October 27, 2021.

D-5-b Special Education Advisory Committee Member Appointments and Leave Request
The Board approved the following motions:

  1. That the Board appoint to the SCDSB SEAC, effective November 1, 2021, Lindsay Massicotte as the SEAC member and Rob Smith as the SEAC alternate member for Community Living Huronia Development Support Services, as set out in Report No. D-5-b, Special Education Advisory Committee Member Appointments and Leave Request, dated October 27, 2021. 
  2. That the Board approve the temporary leave of absence for Dr. Susan Surry, SEAC member for the Orillia School Success Program, effective October 1, 2021, as set out in Report No. D-5-b, Special Education Advisory Committee Member Appointments and Leave Request, dated October 27, 2021.

D-7-a Transportation Update
Daryl Halliday, Superintendent of Education, provided an update on transportation in Simcoe County. Superintendent Halliday noted that the Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium (SCSTC) has indicated that Simcoe County currently has enough drivers to cover existing routes. Superintendent Halliday explained that some routes are experiencing delays due to the limited number of spare drivers available to cover routes when drivers are off.

Questions and Proposal from Trustees

Trustee Beacock asked about the resumption of permits for community use of school and school facilities. 

Trustee O’Brien shared that he attended several virtual school council meetings. Trustee O’Brien asked if the Board of Trustees would consider writing a letter to the Ministry of Education about adding the COVID-19 vaccination to the list of mandatory school vaccinations. 

Trustee Snell asked about future opportunities for in-person parent teacher conferences.

Trustee Connors thanked the Ninth Line Band for their $9,000 donation to the Bradford District High School music program. 

Trustee Beitz commented on the Fall Into Outdoor Learning conference, noting that it was well attended.
