SCDSB Update 5 – November 25, 2020

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, November 25, 2020. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from the Student Trustees
Student Trustee McMahon shared that the student trustees held their first Equity, Diversity and Inclusion sub-committee meeting on November 18. Student Trustee McMahon provided highlights from the Student Senate meeting, which took place virtually on Wednesday, November 25. Student Trustee McMahon noted that 16 students attended the meeting and participated in discussions regarding mental health and well-being led by Maureen Wallis, Assistant Manager of Social Work Service with the Simcoe County District School Board.

Trustee Tribute
Trustee David O’Brien recognized Kim Posluns, Designated Early Childhood Educator at Maple Grove Public School, for receiving the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education. Recipients are honoured for their leadership, exemplary early childhood education practices and their commitment to help build the foundation children need to make the best possible start in life.

Trustee Donna Armstrong recognized Mark Gaynik, Teacher at Nantyr Shores Secondary School, for receiving a Certificate of Achievement as part of the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Recipients are honoured for their leadership, exemplary teaching practices and their commitment to help the next generation gain the knowledge and skills they need for future success in a world inspired by ideas and driven by innovation.

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole

The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, November 25, 2020:

  1. That the Board approve the School/System Administrator Eligibility List as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1, School/System Administrator Eligibility List – November 2020, dated November 11, 2020.
  2. That the Board approve the school administrator appointments as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-2, School Administrator Appointments, dated November 11, 2020.

  4. That the Board approve the proposed leadership restructuring in compliance with Sec. 11b of the Broader Public Sector Executive Compensation Act, 2014, as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-b, Proposed Leadership Restructuring, dated November 25, 2020.
  5. That the Board approve the appointment of John Playford as Supervisory Officer – Superintendent of Education K-12, effective January 4, 2021, according to the terms of a personal services contract between John Playford and the board, pending ministry approval, as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-c, Appointment of Supervisory Officers – Superintendents of Education K-12, dated November 25, 2020.

Reports/Update from Staff
Steve Blake, Director of Education, and Dawn Stephens, Superintendent of Education, provided an update regarding the secondary hybrid learning model. Superintendent Stephens shared that staff training on the digital learning platform Desire2Learn (D2L) occurred during the professional development day on November 20. Superintendent Stephens added that video technology equipment is being delivered to schools, a guidance document for staff is in development and feedback is being collected from staff to assist with planning for additional training. Superintendent Stephens shared that a hybrid learning pilot program is running and feedback is being collected to assist with the development of the secondary hybrid learning model. Director Blake noted that secondary school families have been notified via email about the plan for the secondary hybrid learning model to begin in February 2021. Director Blake shared that information and frequently asked questions have been added to the parent/guardian platform on the SCDSB website as well as a tool for requesting support. 

Director Blake provided an update with regards to the current status of COVID-19 cases impacting SCDSB schools.
