SCDSB Update 15 – May 27, 2020

This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, May 27, 2020. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, May 27, 2020:

D-7-b Staff Reports
Steve Blake, Director of Education, thanked the Board of Trustees for their ongoing support during this unprecedented school closure period. 

Director Blake commented on the SCDSB’s continued focus on student engagement through the Continuity of Learning Plan and the professional development that has taken place with staff. Director Blake noted the importance of recognizing student achievement and the various digital and virtual platforms being used to celebrate students, staff and the community. Director Blake indicated that staff have worked with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit on a plan for students and staff to safely retrieve personal belongings, and that those plans will be communicated with families on a school-by-school basis. Director Blake noted that students can expect to receive a final report card, and that information about the 2020-2021 school year will be shared with families as it becomes available. 

Chris Samis, Superintendent of Program and Special Education, and Dawn Stephens, Superintendent of Education, provided an update on the SCDSB’s Continuity of Learning Plan. Superintendent Samis shared that the board continues to engage over 50,000 students in distance learning through both virtual learning environments and the delivery of paper packages, and that over 1,000 educators have received professional development training. Superintendent Stephens noted the ongoing focus on mental health and well-being, and commented on the various supports in place to ensure student success. 

Brian Jeffs, Superintendent of Business and Facility Services, provided an update with regards to the contracts that were awarded within the approved budget for the month of May. Superintendent Jeffs shared an environment and sustainability update focused on the areas of energy conservation, waste diversion, water conservation, school ground greening, environmental education and EcoSchools certification. Superintendent Jeffs noted that over 50 schools were EcoSchool certified in 2018-2019, and 46 schools have completed stage one of certification for the 2019-2020 year.
