Rotary clubs support literacy with annual Rotary Book Day in Barrie and Innisfil
On Nov. 20, over 1,200 of the Simcoe County District School Board’s Grade 2 students will receive copies of Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure, thanks to a donation by the Rotary Clubs of Barrie and Innisfil.
Rotary mascot Sprocket, President Craig Graham from the Rotary Club of Barrie and celebrity guest Andrew Robert, Chief of Paramedic Services, County of Simcoe, will visit Maple Grove Public School at 9:40 a.m. to deliver the books and read the story to students. Hanne Nielsen, SCDSB Superintendent of Education, Partnerships and Lifelong Learning, will also be in attendance.
“Our partnership with the Rotary Clubs of Barrie and Innisfil allow opportunities like this for the students to get excited about reading and discuss values and positive character traits,” says Hanne Nielsen, Superintendent of Education, Partnerships and Lifelong Learning. “We are so pleased with the dedication of these outstanding community members who want to make a difference in our students’ lives.”
Aligned with the SCDSB’s character education program, Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure is a story of a young entrepreneur named Andy who, with the help of a mysterious voice providing guidance and support, learns the value of truthfulness, fairness, goodwill and partnerships that benefit everyone involved. The school board’s character attributes – Integrity, Responsibility, Cooperation, Caring, Respect, Optimism, Honesty, Empathy, Courage and Inclusiveness - align with Rotary’s 4 Way Test of - Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
On Rotary Book Day, Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Barrie and the Rotary Club of Innisfil will coordinate the delivery of books and the presence of ‘celebrity readers’ from RCAF 16 Wing Command Staff-Base Borden, the Barrie Police Service and the Simcoe County Paramedics Service for the reading of books to students at schools throughout Barrie and Innisfil.
This initiative links directly to the SCDSB's Strategic Priorities under the pillars of excellence in teaching and learning and community.
