This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.

Report from Student Trustees

Student Trustee Evan Marriott provided a report on the first Student Senate meeting of the year and conveyed their satisfaction with the turnout and the desire for all secondary schools to send representation. Student Senate determined their focus for the year would be on equity, inclusion and mental health. 

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole

The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, September 26, 2018:

  1. That the Board direct staff to continue efforts to secure 14 Ramblewood Drive, Wasaga Beach, for a one-year term starting September 2018, as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-1, Pilot: Adult Programming Space in Wasaga Beach, dated September 5, 2018.
  2. That the Board approve the expropriation of the Subject Property and authorize the Chair and/or the Director to execute the resolution for the expropriation of the 2.2-hectare property at 742 Simcoe Road, for the purposes of a public elementary school and related improvements, as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-2, South Bradford Elementary School Site Expropriation, dated September 5, 2018.

D-5-a First Nations Representation on the Board

The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve a position of a First Nations Representative on the Board of Trustees for the 2018-2022 trustee term, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, First Nations Representation on the Board, dated September 26, 2018.

D-5-b Election Compliance Audit Committee

The Board approved the following motion: 

  1. That the Board approve an Election Compliance Audit Committee for the 2018 election term, consisting of the individuals, as set out in Report No. D-5-b, Election Compliance Audit Committee, dated September 26, 2018.

D-5-c Revisions to Policy No. 2125 – Trustee Code of Conduct

The Board approved the following motion: 

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2125 – Trustee Code of Conduct, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. D-5-c, Revisions to Policy No. 2125 – Trustee Code of Conduct, dated September 26, 2018.

D-5-d Revisions to Policy No. 2186 – Director of Education Performance Review and Procedure

The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2186 – Director of Education Performance Review and Procedure, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. D-5-d, Revisions to Policy No. 2186 – Director of Education Performance Review and Procedure, dated September 26, 2018.

D-5-e Revisions to Policy No. 2190 – Director of Education Job Description

The Board approved the following motion:

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2190 – Director of Education Job Description, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. D-5-e, Revisions to Policy No. 2190 – Director of Education Job Description, dated September 26, 2018.

Questions and Proposals from Trustees 

Trustee Da Silva reported on communication that she received from one individual wishing to thank board staff for their efficiency and assistance in addressing their questions. She also reported on communication received from two former students wishing to thank and recognize their former teachers for providing them with the education to equip them for success in their future endeavours.

Chair Beacock reported on the successful start to the school year. 

Chair Beacock reported on the various fundraising activities that are taking place throughout SCDSB schools and facilities, that to-date have raised $3.5 million in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. 

Chair Beacock reported on the opening of the RVH Youth Mental Health Day Program, in partnership with the SCDSB, which delivers unique programming for secondary school students struggling with serious mental health and anxiety. 

Vice-chair Lloyd reported on the Orange Shirt Day Campaign – Every Child Matters being recognized nationally on September 30 as part of the commitment to reconciliation. She encouraged trustees to wear orange and noted that the SCDSB is recognizing Orange Shirt Day on October 1 as September 30 falls on a Sunday.
