​This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, April 25, 2018. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.  

Report from Student Trustees

Student Trustee Gabi Millsap shared the report from Student Senate on behalf of the student trustees. Millsap reported that the student trustee elections for the 2018-19 school year were held on April 24, 2018. Thirteen students participated in the election process. Victoria McMahon from Bear Creek Secondary School, Julia Felgner from Twin Lakes Secondary School and Evan Marriott from Stayner Collegiate Institute were the successful candidates and will begin their term as SCDSB Student Trustees on August 1, 2018.   

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole

The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, April 25, 2018:  

  1. That the Board approve the Beausoleil First Nation Education Services Agreement, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. CL-BF-D-1, Education Services Agreement – Beausoleil First Nation, dated April 4, 2018.
  2. That the Board approve that a letter be sent by the Simcoe County District School Board Chairperson to the County of Simcoe Warden and County Council to correct the inaccurate assertions made by the Mayor of the Town of Wasaga Beach in a recent email to the Warden and County Council.

D-4-a Business and Facilities (April 4, 2018) 

The Board approved the following motions: 

  1. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2410 – Transportation of Students, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. BF-D-1, Revisions to Policy No. 2410 – Transportation of Students, dated April 4, 2018.
  2. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 3115 – Accessibility Standards for Customer Service, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No.  BF-D-2, Revisions to Policy No. 3115 – Accessibility Standards for Customer Service, dated April 4, 2018.   
  3. That the Board approve the adoption of Policy No. 2101 – Use of School Board Resources During the Municipal and School Board Election Campaign, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. BF-D-3, New Policy No. 2101 – Use of School Board Resources During the Municipal and School Board Election Campaign, dated April 4, 2018.  
  4. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 3140 – Health and Safety, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. BF-D-4, Revisions to Policy No. 3140 – Health and Safety, dated April 4, 2018.  
  5. That the Board approve the revisions to Policy No. 2350 – Disposition of Property, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No.  BF-D-5, Revisions to Policy No. 2350 – Disposition of Property, dated April 4, 2018.

D-4-b Program Standing (April 11, 2018)

The Board approved the following motion:  

  1. That the Board approve revisions to Policy No. 4105 – Curriculum Policy, as set out in APPENDIX C of Report No. PRO-D-1, Revisions to Policy No. 4105 – Curriculum Policy, dated April 11, 2018.

D-5-a Appointment to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) - Director and Alternate Director for the 2018-2019 School Year

The Board approved the following motion:  

  1. That the Board appoint Trustee Da Silva as the representative to serve as a director on the OPSBA Board of Directors, and appoint Trustee Aikins to serve as an alternate director from the period of April 26, 2018 to November 30, 2018, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Appointment to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) – Director and Alternate Director for the 2018-2019 School Year, dated April 25, 2018.

Questions and Proposals from Trustees

Trustee Locke reported on the excitement that is building in the community regarding the construction of Georgian Bay District Secondary School.

Vice-chairperson Lloyd reported on school visits that she has been conducting in her area regarding the schools’ music programs. She congratulated the schools on their work and the recourses they are using, and encouraged trustees to visit some of the music programs that are running at schools in their area if they have the opportunity. 

Director’s Comments

Director Blake reported that Sherry Morrow, Educational Assistant at Bradford District High School was the recipient of the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, which recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields. 

Director Blake also reported that Crystal Carbino, Registered Early Childhood Educator and Becky Kennedy, Ontario College of Teachers Qualified Teacher, were the recipients of the Frances Poleschuk Award, which recognizes educators or educator teams in Ontario who have made an exemplary contribution to the education of young children.
