The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) received Capital Project Funding to support a new elementary school in Wasaga Beach.

Capital Project Funding is approved by the Ministry of Education based on the submission of a business case outlining current enrolment capacity of the schools, number of portables, the ability of neighbouring schools in neighbouring municipalities to accommodate students, impacts of special education and French Immersion programming and the impacts of projected residential growth on enrolment.

“If there is a strong business case, and we have the data to support our enrolment projections and trends, we will put forward a submission to the Ministry for consideration,” notes Brian Jeffs, Superintendent of Business and Facility Services.

“The SCDSB advocated for an elementary school in Wasaga Beach and we are happy to announce that this project has been approved.”

Provincial legislation sets out that decisions regarding pupil accommodation are the responsibility of locally-elected school boards. As such, the Ministry of Education does not direct specific accommodation proposals from boards.

“With new student registration and continued development, it is expected that the addition of a new elementary school will help to ease pressures on our existing schools and accommodate future students,” says Peter Beacock, Chairperson of the Board.

In a letter to the Mayor of the Town of Wasaga Beach, dated Jan. 26, 2018, the Ministry of Education has indicated that they are prepared to provide the SCDSB with provincial funding to assist with the acquisition of land for a secondary school site designated by the board.

“We are aware that the Town of Wasaga Beach has a desire for a secondary school. As students move through the elementary panel, the board will be better positioned to submit a strong business case to the Ministry for a secondary school,” adds Steve Blake, Director of Education.
