E-Learning
About
E-Learning is quickly becoming an important part of all educational and career paths.
E-Learning offers you access to selected credit courses anywhere, anytime via the Internet.
Recognizing the needs of 21st century learners, students may earn Ontario high school credits online through the Simcoe County District School Board e-Learning program. Courses meet all curriculum expectations and standards. All courses are taught by fully qualified teachers in collaboration with e-Learning Ontario (eLO) and the Ontario e-Learning Consortium (OeLC).
Benefits of an e-Learning Course
• Students develop knowledge of the internet and computers skills that will help the
21st century learners throughout their lives and careers;
• Enables students to learn in a more flexible engaging environment;
• Students can study anywhere they have access to a computer and internet
connection;
• E-Learning can accommodate different learning styles and facilitate learning through
a variety of activities;
• Self-paced learning modules allow students to work at their own pace;
• Successfully completing online courses builds self-knowledge and self-confidence;
• Encourages students to take responsibility for their learning;
• Can foster more interaction among students and instructors than a face-to-face

• able to regularly use a computer with internet access;
• comfortable with technology, i.e. email, attachments, internet research, word
processing, etc.;
• able to organize a study schedule each week, set goals and deadlines for
themselves, and stick to them;

spend on regular classroom courses;

How to Get Started
Students will need to make an appointment with their home school guidance counsellor to review their course selection, determine what courses are available (through SCDSB, OeLC, AMDEC, or Trillium), and obtain approval. The course offerings will vary from year to year.
After students register into an e-Learning course, the student will be sent an e-mail with course information, website address, user name and password. The student is then required to complete the course Orientation.

E-Learning Orientation
Students taking on‐line courses with SCDSB must login to their courses during the first week of the semester to complete the online orientation before beginning the course material. Orientation is a mandatory session and will only take place once per semester.
In addition to training on how your virtual classroom functions, you will receive information on how to use online support, submit assignments, participate in class discussions, and how to contact your teacher.
Students taking on‐line courses through another board will receive their orientation information and expectations via an e‐mail.
How will I access my online course?
To enter your virtual classroom you will access https://scdsb.elearningontario.ca/ and then login to a software program called Desire2Learn. Desire2Learn (D2L) contains all of your lessons, assignments and evaluations as well as the tools you will use to interact and communicate with your classmates and your teacher.
