<item><title>SCDSB Students Heading to Kenya this Summer </title><link>http://scdsb.on.ca/about-us/news-events/?i=13245</link><description>A class of Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB)&amp;rsquo;s students have been learning about global citizenship through the SCDSB Kenya Study and Leadership Program, and the 16 students are now preparing to travel to Kenya this summer to apply their newfound skills and knowledge.
The Kenya Study and Leadership Program is a volunteer and leadership opportunity for SCDSB Grade 11 and 12 students. Students earn two Grade 12 university-level credits while completing the program.&amp;nbsp; This course is designed to teach young adults and educators about affecting the developing world and, in particular, Africa. This project is undertaken in partnership with Me to We, an affiliate of Free the Children.
&amp;ldquo;This program offers students opportunities for leadership growth, awareness of global concerns, and provides a foundation for civic involvement and contribution, both locally and internationally,&amp;rdquo; says Nottawasaga Pines Secondary School teacher and trip organizer Stephanie Cryer. &amp;ldquo;This unique and amazing opportunity provides students with the chance to apply their classroom learning on a global scale and create sustainable social change.&amp;rdquo;
Students prepare for this experience by completing a study program where they learn about Third World issues such as health care, child labour, colonialism, native culture and education.&amp;nbsp;
The program also involves two weeks of volunteering in the Maasai Mara area of rural Kenya. In July 2012, students will travel to Kenya to help in the construction of village schools, teach, learn about wildlife migration patterns and engage in seminars about issues affecting the cultures of Kenya such as poaching and environmental protection.
The group is currently collecting items that can be given to the Kenyan community (health and school supplies), as well as donations to cover travel costs. Please contact Stephanie Cryer at stcryer@mail.scdsb.on.ca to coordinate donations.
