Literacy
Enhancing the reading and writing skills of all Simcoe County students is a key element to improving student achievement. The principles we use to guide our decision-making in the area of literacy follow:
Guiding Principles for Literacy Initiatives
- All students deserve the opportunity to learn to read and write to be provided with skills and strategies they need to be successful learners.
- All students deserve access to a wide variety of reading materials that they can and want to read. All students deserve instruction that builds the skills, the confidence and the desire to read an increasingly complex, diverse variety of materials (e.g., fiction, non-fiction, technical).
- All students deserve assessment that shows their strengths as well as their needs and that guides their teachers to design instruction that will help them grow as readers.
- All students will have teachers who model and provide explicit instruction in reading, comprehension, and writing across the curriculum, from JK to Grade 12/OAC.
- All students deserve home and community support that will enhance their efforts to achieve advanced levels of literacy.
Further information about literacy is available on the Ministry of Education website.
