Extended French

The Extended French as a Second Language (EFSL) program, which has been in existence in Simcoe County District School Board since 1989, is a program that begins in Grade 5.

Program Description

At the elementary level, students receive instruction in French for 50% of the school day in the areas of French language arts, social studies/history/geography, and in at least two of the following subjects: physical education/health, art, music, drama and dance. Language arts, math and science are taught in English in the remaining 50% of the day.

At the secondary level, two EFSL credits are taught in each of Grades 9 to 11. One is offered at the Grade 12 level, for a total of 7 credits. Credits include four Extended French language arts, one at each grade level, and two from Canadian World Studies, usually geography in Grade 9 and history in Grade 10. The second credit offered in Grade 11 is chosen at the discretion of the school and depends on available resources or staff. When students complete the seven-credit EFSL program, they are awarded an Extended French Certificate, issued by the Simcoe County District School Board.

As of September 2007, EFSL programs are offered at 9 elementary schools and 7 secondary schools. Please check out our Extended French brochure below, or in the Publications section for a listing of schools.
