Waste Diversion

Waste Diversion Programs

The Simcoe County District School Board has partnered with the County of Simcoe to collect organic waste from elementary schools and recycling from both elementary and secondary schools located in the County of Simcoe (this excludes schools located in the cities of Barrie and Orillia). SCDSB will continue the collection of recycling in Barrie and Orillia.

Schools Located in the County of Simcoe

Learning & Living GreenThe Learning and Living Green partnership will provide schools located within the County of Simcoe’s jurisdiction with the opportunity to divert a significant amount of waste from landfill as the County will be collecting organic waste and more materials (including more plastics and milk cartons) in their recycling program than is collected under the SCDSB’s current program (Elementary Program Poster and Secondary Program Poster). The diversion program in the schools will in essence be identical to that available to households within the County. Studies indicate that this type of program will improve the participation and diversion rates at school and at home.

To further support the Learning & Living Green program the SCDSB in partnership with the SMCDSB created a monthly newsletter to be distributed to teachers that provides them with information and resources to integrate waste diversion issues into classroom lessons.

Schools located in the City of Barrie and the City of Orillia will also receive enhanced recycling collection (see SCDSB Recycles Poster). Recycling collection will be increased to include more plastics and milk cartons that are currently excluded in the recycling program.

Waste Free Lunches

The best way for us to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill is to simply reduce how much waste we produce everyday.
For school-age children the bulk of the waste that they produce comes from their lunch.  Today’s children are bringing lunches with most things processed and pre-packaged – they are convenient to pack, and seem like an inexpensive option at first glance, however, studies have shown that these foods are often lacking in nutrients when compared to home-made, fresh options, are more expensive, and tend to be wasted.

This is why schools are continually working to encourage children to bring waste-free lunches.  Not only does it reduce the amount of waste in the classrooms, it also helps to encourage healthier food choices and to reduce the costs to the families purchasing the lunch items.

Check out this resource for more on how and why it’s important to pack a waste-free lunch. Schools, feel free to distribute this to parents.
