Influenza Information - SMDHU Flu Clinics
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s community flu clinics will be held Wednesdays and Saturdays from November 2 to November 26 throughout Simcoe and Muskoka. This year, though, the program has developed an online clinic appointment booking system.
So rather than wait in line, with just a few clicks on your computer you can select a clinic date, location and appointment time that works for you.
The health unit’s website, www.simcoemuskokahealth.org, has a hot button on the home page that takes you directly to the clinic booking system. Or check it out now by clicking the Flu online button to the right.
The flu shot is recommended for everyone six months of age and over. The flu shot can help to avoid days off sick from school or work. It can also help prevent you taking the flu home to your own family. For the very young and the old, and for those with chronic illnesses, influenza can be life threatening—we can all help to prevent the spread of influenza.

Active Living Strategy
As part of the Provincial Government’s ACTIVE2010 strategy a new and exciting partnership was formed between the Ministry of Health Promotion and the YMCA. A community based “Roundtable” approach was designed to create community physical activity plans.
In early 2005, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka convened people and organizations in Simcoe County who share a passion for healthy, active living and a sense of urgency related to current levels of physical inactivity. Their common mission? To get people moving and living healthier lives. Their common task? To exchange information, experience and insight toward the creation of a plan of action.

Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO)
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) has a new no-cost dental program for eligible children and youth ages 17 years and under. Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO) offers a full range of dental services, including checkups, cleaning, fillings, X-rays, scaling and more. HSO is available three different ways – through a full-service clinic at the health unit’s Barrie office on 80 Bradford Street, participating dentist or dental hygienist, or by visiting the health unit’s mobile dental clinic that travels to communities in Simcoe Muskoka.
Elementary
Eligible children and teens under the age of 18 with urgent dental care needs, such as fillings and extractions, can be covered under the Children in Need of Treatment program. Both programs are in addition to dental screening offered to all students in grades JK, SK, 2 and 8 by oral health staff at the health unit. After screening, parents of children needing preventative care are contacted by the health unit and offered information about no-cost services available through school or health unit clinics.
Secondary
Eligible children and teens under the age of 18 with urgent dental care needs, such as fillings and extractions, can be covered under the Children in Need of Treatment program. Both programs are in addition to dental screening available to students by oral health staff at the health unit in collaboration with the schools. After screening, children needing preventative care are offered information about no-cost services available through school or health unit clinics.
