Board & Committees

Regular school board and standing committee meetings are usually held in the Education Centre, 1170 Highway 26, Midhurst, Ontario. The Board of Trustees, the Director of Education, superintendents and staff are present at these meetings which are open to members of the public. Agendas and reports are prepared for each meeting and official minutes are recorded. Examples of board meeting activities include receiving and considering staff and committee reports and recommendations, hearing scheduled delegations, debating and voting on motions and referring matters to standing committees or administration.

Board

Regular school board meetings are usually held on the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Education Centre. Public meetings begin at 7:30 pm. (Public session briefly commences at 6:00 p.m., followed immediately by the Committee of the Whole in closed session. Public session then resumes at 7:30 p.m.) Trustees, the Director of Education, superintendents and staff are present at the meeting which is open to members of the public. Agendas and reports are prepared for each meeting and official minutes are recorded.

Program Standing Committee

All members of the Board are members of this standing committee which normally meets on the first Wednesday of of every third month (October, January and April) during the school year. The Committee considers information and makes recommendations to the Board in the following areas: curriculum, instruction and assessment; adult and continuing education; school-community - business partnerships; school budgets; school councils; Parent Involvement Committee; other matters referred to the Committee.

The recommendations of the Committee will be presented to a regular meeting of the Board at the first practical opportunity for consideration and ratification.

Facility Standing Committee

All members of the Board are members of this standing committee which normally meets on the first Wednesday of every third month (September, December and March) during the school year. The committee considers information and makes recommendations to the Board with respect to: building maintenance and custodial operations; construction and renewal; capital planning process; attendance areas; school closure and consolidation; site acquisitions, declarations and disposal of surplus property; leasing and letting; education development charges; community use of facilities; system enrolment reporting; occupational health and safety; other matters referred to the Committee. The Committee may at times have a Closed Session to deal with confidential matters.

The recommendations of the Committee will be presented to a regular meeting of the Board at the first practical opportunity for consideration and ratification.

Finance Standing Committee

All members of the Board are members of this standing committee which normally meets on the first Wednesday of every third month during the school year (November, February and May). The Committee will consider information and make recommendations to the Board with respect to: financial systems and reporting; risk management; information and communication systems; transportation; scholarship and trust funds; budget; the duties of an audit committee, at a separate meeting called for that purpose; other matters referred to the Committee. The Committee may at times have a Closed Session to deal with confidential matters.

The recommendations of the Committee will be presented to a regular meeting of the Board at the first practical opportunity for consideration and ratification.

Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC)

This committee which usually meets on the third Monday of every month during the school year includes representatives and alternates from local associations and three trustees (one of whom must be the trustee representative for Simcoe County's Native communities). "Local association" means an association or organization of parents that operates locally and is affiliated with an association or organization that is incorporated and operates throughout Ontario to further the interests and well-being of one or more groups of exceptional children or adults.

The role of SEAC is to make recommendations to the Board in respect of any matter affecting the establishment, development and delivery of special education programs and services relating to exceptional pupils of the Board. SEAC may advise the Board in a range of policy areas pertaining to special education.

The recommendations of this committee are usually presented to the next regular meeting of the Board for consideration and decision.

Accessibility Advisory Committee

The mandate of the Simcoe County District School Board Accessibility Advisory Committee is to assist in fulfilling requirements originally outlined in the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001, and continuing under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.

Parent Involvement Committee & School Councils

The SCDSB Parent Involvement Committee organizes the monthly School Council meetings. All schools in Ontario have an organized Council comprised of elected parents, a community representative, teaching and non-teaching employees and a school administrator. The participants provide a valuable service to our school community as a support system, as an advisory group and as a forum where educational topics and issues are investigated.
