Special Education
The following are publications relating to Special Education. Please click on the title to open the PDF document.
Individual Education Plan (IEP) Brochure
Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are learning and teaching plans developed for students who learn in a very different way or at a very different rate than their classmates. Ontario Regulation 181/98 requires the writing of an IEP for all students who are identified as exceptional through the Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) process. This written record outlines a child’s individual program and helps parents, guardians and teachers track the student's progress and plan next steps in learning. The IEP brochure outlines parents and guardians role in this process.
Special Education Plan
Please note: this is a 104 page document, and may take a few minutes to download.
The Simcoe County District School Board’s (SCDSB’s) Special Education Plan outlines the Board’s philosophy of special education and describes the special education programs and services available. It has been designed in accordance with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Education Act and regulations made under the Act.
Parent's Guide to Special Education
This guide was designed to provide information on the Identification, Placement, and Review Committee (IPRC), and to set out for you the procedures involved in identifying a pupil as "exceptional", deciding the pupil's placement, or appealing such decisions if you do not agree with the IPRC.
Kindergarten and School Programs
Mixed Age Grouping in the Kindergarten Years
Mixed-age grouping is a classroom placement model where children who are at least one year apart in age are grouped together in the same classroom.

Extended French as a Second Language
In Grades 5 through 8, the Extended French as a Second Language program provides instruction during the day, half in French and half in English. At the secondary level the program offers a total of 7 courses.
Section 19
Section 19 educational programs are funded by the Ministry of Education for students unable to attend regular or special education classes within a community school.
Offered from primary grades to high school, the programs follow Ministry guidelines but are delivered in a flexible manner to meet the individual needs of Section 19 students. The focus is on treatment along with life and learning skills. Student educational programs follow Ministry curriculum expectations and are individualized to meet learning needs. Students in the secondary programs can earn credits and work towards a diploma.
Assessment and Reporting
A parent's guide to understanding how student work is assessed and the reporting process.
Selecting the right courses in Grade 9
Students learn and achieve at different rates and in a variety of ways. In recognition of this, three different tyes of credit courses are available in most schools in Grade 9 Mathematics, Science and English.
Newcomer Welcome Centre
The Newcomer Welcome Centre offers services to support families new to Canada and the Simcoe County District School Board.
Attendance Counsellors
There is a strong connection between school attendance and success. Poor attendance often results in students dropping out and subsequently having a low level of basic skills. Finding and keeping jobs becomes a problem, as does low self-esteem. There is no doubt that success in school helps a youth to feel better and to do better. The Simcoe County District School Board employs 6 attendance counsellors, who will work with families to protect each student’s right to an education.
