This update provides highlights of the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) Board Meeting held Wednesday, June 21, 2017. Agendas and/or reports considered at this meeting are available at www.scdsb.on.ca.
 
Report from Student Trustees
Student Trustees Grace Leyshon and Matt Thorhauge shared their appreciation with the Board for the opportunity to advocate on behalf of all SCDSB students. The student trustees also expressed their thanks to Superintendent Paula Murphy, Executive Assistant Julie Fisher and Student Trustee Mentor Michele Locke for their support.
 
Student Trustee Presentation
Trustee Locke commended the student trustees on their decision to pursue the role, and for the work that they have done as representatives for their peers across Simcoe County.
 
Student Trustee Leyshon will be returning to Stayner Collegiate Institute to complete her secondary education next year, while Student Trustee Thorhauge will be at the University of Guelph.

Trustee Tribute
 
Vice-Chair Lloyd presented a trustee tribute to Trevor Henson, an adult student at the Collingwood Learning Centre, for his work to raise awareness about bullying. In April 2017, Collingwood held its first Community Flag Raising Ceremony at the Collingwood Library to support the International Day of Pink.

Presentation – National Aboriginal Day
Evelyn Ball, Assistant First Nation Manager for Chippewas of Rama First Nation, presented information about National Aboriginal Day. The day was officially declared by the Government of Canada in 1996 as a day to recognize the many contributions of indigenous people across Canada. Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared that moving forward, the day will be known as National Indigenous Peoples Day.
 
Today, Rama First Nation recognized SCDSB Principal Lisa Ewanchuk with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Education.
 
Evelyn shared some of the traditions and celebrations that members of Rama First Nation participated in today. She also shared sweet grass braids with attendees and commended the SCDSB for the work that we continue to do in supporting our First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities.

Report from the Closed Session of the Board in Committee of the Whole
 
The Board ratified the following recommendations taken in the Closed Session meeting of the Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, June 21, 2017:

1. That the Board approve the streamlining of leased properties and the renewal extension for the Orillia Learning Centre, as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-1, Orillia Learning Centre Lease Renewal, dated June 7, 2017.

2. That the Board approve the accommodation options for the Simcoe Alternative Secondary School Program, as set out in Report No. CL-BF-D-2, Simcoe Alternative Secondary School Lease Renewals, dated June 7, 2017.

3. That the Board approve the school administrator appointments, as set out in Report No. CL-HR-D-1, School Administrator Appointments, dated June 14, 2017.

5. That the Board approve the appointment of Dawn Stephens as Supervisory Officer - Superintendent of Education K-12, effective August 21, 2017, according to the terms of a personal services contract between Dawn Stephens and the Board, as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-a, Appointment of Supervisory Officer – Superintendent of Education K-12, dated June 21, 2017.

6. That the Board approve the school administrator appointments, as set out in Report No. CL-B-2-b, School Administrator Appointments, dated June 21, 2017.

7. That the Simcoe County District School Board reaffirm its support for the Executive Compensation Framework, as developed by the four trustee associations and CODE.

8. That the Simcoe County District School Board endorses the position that the Executive Compensation Framework, as initially recommended, be supported and implemented by OPSBA without revision.

D-4-a Business & Facilities June 7, 2017
  1. That the Board approve that an attendance area review be undertaken, commencing in the Fall of 2017, that includes Chris Hadfield Public School, Fieldcrest Elementary School, Fred C. Cook Public School and W.H. Day Elementary School, as set out in Report No. BF-D-1, Bradford Elementary Attendance Area Review 2017-2018, dated June 7, 2017.
  2. That the Board approve that Policy No. 2230, General Purchasing remain status quo, as set out in APPENDIX A of Report No. BF-D-2, Review of Policy No. 2230 – General Purchasing, dated June 7, 2017.

D-5-a Appointment of Student Trustee Mentor
That the Board appoint Trustee Michele Locke to serve as the student trustee mentor from August 1, 2017 to July 31, 2018, as set out in Report No. D-5-a, Appointment of Student Trustee Mentor, dated June 21, 2017.

D-5-b Amendment to Motion Regarding Treasurer Designation
That the Board amend Motion #BP-2017-02-08-02 approved at the February 8, 2017 Board Meeting to the following, That the Board approve the appointment of Stephen Blake as the Director of Education and Secretary of the Simcoe County District School Board, effective March 20, 2017, in accordance with the terms of the contract between Stephen Blake and the Simcoe County District School Board and affirm that Brian Jeffs, Superintendent of Business Services, remain as Treasurer of the Simcoe County District School Board as set out in Report No. D-5-b, Amendment to Motion Regarding Treasurer Designation, dated June 21, 2017.

Questions and Proposals from Trustees

Trustee Aikins acknowledged that she breached the Trustee Code of Conduct and offered an apology.
 
Chair Beacock noted that the annual retirement dinner was held on June 12 and commended the staff involved in coordinating that event. He also commented on the grand opening of Lake Simcoe Public School, which was held earlier this week. Chair Beacock concluded his comments by thanking staff for their work this school year and wishing them a happy summer.
